Since not many people choose to golf in the rain, most golf carts do not encounter much precipitation. However, because weather conditions can sometimes be unpredictable, many cart owners understandably have questions about how safe it is to drive a golf cart in the rain.  Under The Sun Golf Cars has put together this helpful article to help answer any questions you might have.

Can Golf Carts Handle Rain?

Can golf carts be driven in the rain without damaging the cart? In the case of light rain, yes. The roof and windshield (if you have one) should offer sufficient protection to the driver and passengers, and the risk of damaging the cart itself is minimal.

With heavier or more sustained rainfall, it is a different story. Not only will the cart’s interior likely get wet and make things uncomfortable, the electrical elements under your cart may become damaged. Regardless, you should seek shelter as soon as you see lightning or hear thunder. Store your golf cart indoors if possible, and use a tarp to protect any carts stored outdoors.

Safe Driving Tips

Driving through deep puddles can cause water to splash up into your cart’s undercarriage and damage important parts, so avoid deep puddles no matter the weather. You may also wish to install a set of windshield wipers into your cart to help maintain visibility in the rain.

While you should be staying on top of your golf cart’s maintenance needs regardless of the weather, tire maintenance is particularly important if you are going to be driving on a lot of wet ground. Proper tread depth and tire pressure helps your cart get traction, so take care of your tires.

Driving on wet surfaces will also affect how your cart handles. It can be difficult to stop or safely maneuver your cart under these conditions, so you should reduce your speed. You should also avoid going up any slopes or inclines when it is raining, as slick roads make it more likely that your cart will slide back down or become overturned.
